The quality of the fuel used can have a significant impact of the reliability and the life of the boiler. Off- specification pellets can contaminate stocks of good materials and maybe difficult to dispose of.
The use of contaminated material can lead to breaches of emissions and waste regulations as well as long term damage to the heating systems.
The European standards have been development based on the work of CEN’s TC35 solid biofuels committee.
As a minimum the fuel should comply with the following acc. To OENORM M 7135 and ENplus Class A1.

If the fuel to operate the boiler (s), does not meet the attached pellet specification, we cannot guarantee the performance of the boilers and physical damage or incapacitation of the boilers and fuel transport system may result. Furthermore should be called out to side to intervene as a result of the boiler (s), being operated using inferior fuel, our labour and nay replacement parts required to rectify the situation will be chargeable items.
New European standards for solid biomass fuels have been introduced in 2011. They include a standard for wood pellets (EN 14961-2) which ENplus helps to implement all over Europe. The individual national standards are no longer valid. EN 14961-2 was superceded by ISO 17225-2 standard in 2014. With the handbook 3.0 ENplus changes to follow the ISO standard.
The standard includes quality classes A1 and A2 that are also implemented via ENplus. Class A1 is the premium quality used in private household boilers or stoves. A1 pellets produce the least amount of ash and fulfill the highest requirements. Class A2 is used in larger installations and produces more ash. Industrial pellets are not called “ENplus”, but can be certified as “EN B”.
